Arby's is much more healthy than other fast food places, but it still packs a lot of calories! For example, the Beef n Cheddar Sandwich (Arby's) has 444 calories. If you add a medium
Curly Fries you get another 500 calories. Add a Pepsi to that you're getting another 200 calories or so. Therefore, you meal ends up being 1200 calories. That's a little much for the normal person! If you get the large pop and refill it you're looking at 600 calories just for the soda, so you'd be enjoying yourself a 1600 calorie meal! The key is to not eat too much!

Arby's Nutrition Facts Milkshakes

Arby's Jamocha Swirl Shake is delicious! But it is nearly 500 calories. That's about a meal in itself! We have to be careful not to couple these shakes with some of the burgers with higher calories if we want to remain thin.

Lost City Asks "Who Goes to Loeser's Deli?"

To contact us Click HERE

My Nov. 30 "Who Goes There?" column for Eater took me to The Bronx for only the third time in the history of the feature. Here's the piece:

Who Goes There? Loeser's Deli
A year or so ago, I profiled Liebman's Deli in this space. At that time, the Riverdale section of The Bronx hosted a relative bonanza of pastrami and pickles. There were three, count 'em, three kosher delis. Since then, one of them, Skyview, has succumbed. That leave only a duece: Liebman's and this 51-year-old specimen.
Of the Riverdale kosher delis, Loeser's is the most modest, the most humble. It's barely a restaurant at all, though there are a few no-frills tables in back. It's also the only one where you're guaranteed to find the joint's namesake on hand. Freddy Loeser, a wiry, careworn character with the face of a Catskill tummler, is usually there to take your order, as well as extol the virtues of his wares should there be any question about it. "Best in the city!" he proclaims, pointing to a New York Daily News article that named Loeser's Pastrami the city's ultimate expression. In case you miss the article, the news is trumpeted on banners inside and outside the narrow, 231st Street storefront.
Who comes here, we asked. Mainly Riverdale folk? "People come from everywhere," said Loeser. "We've got a VERY GOOD reputation." This is probably very true. Though, when we were there, the visitors were all local, and Freddy knew each one of their names. "How was yesterday?" said one. "Very busy," said Freddy. "All day." The yesterday mentioned was Thanksgiving, and Loeser's was open for business.
At one point, a large Latino family entered. They clearly didn't know what they had stumbled upon and, after the kids groused a bit about the unfamiliar surroundings and menu, they departed. But the mother wandered back in and started asking questions. She knew something good when she saw it.
Loeser's was founded in 1960, when Freddy was just 17. (He used his bar mitzvah money to start the place.) Back then, Freddy's father Ernest handled the meat, later tutoring his son. The shop still has the feel of that era. There's wood paneling on the wall. The fridge is filled with every amiable flavor of Dr. Brown's. Specials are announced by cardboard signs, some of them handmade. "Hot Soup." "Hot Coffee." "Ice Cold Drinks." The one bit of out-of-sync weirdness is the large, Anglophilic, fox and hounds mural along the side of the wall.
The menu, by deli standards, is refreshingly succinct, with a limited number of choices. And the sandwiches, while advertised as "overstuffed," do not venture into Carnegie-Deli levels of excess. A single mouth can devour one handily. I had the pastrami. It was delicious—on the lean, as opposed to fatty side. Cole slaw was fresh. But the overdone fries needed work. The prices are not Carnegie level either. I had all over the above, plus a soda, and got change back on my $20.

Remembering Harvey's Chelsea House

To contact us Click HERE

Back in the early '90s, when I was a non-blogging, budding sentimentalist, I worked for a time at a horrible theatre trade magazine in the Flatiron District. (It wasn't called that at the time.) In my attempts to distance myself from my boss and duties, I would use my lunch hour to range as far from my office as possible.
I remember frequently passing an old restaurant at 108 W. 18th Street which has a grand, vertical, three-story sign that said "Harvey's." Peering in, I saw a long bar, high ceilings, tile floors, beveled glass and a dining room in the back. It was one of my first impressions of what was meant by the term Olde New York.
I didn't know much about the place, and soon thereafter it closed for good. I have been obsessed with the joint every sense. Recently I decided to find out more about the restaurant that still haunts my memory. It was worth the inquiry.
When Harvey's Chelsea House closed in December 1991, it was 102 years old. A man named Dick Harvey had owned it for its final 16 years of its existence. He told the New York Times that taxes, insurance and utility costs, compounded by a bad economy, had forced him to close.
Harvey's Chelsea House opened in 1889 as a kind of dark-wooded, manly eatery that was prevalent and popular at that time. It was finely appointed. It had a 40-foot bar of red, burled, Honduras mahogany, crystal cabinetwork, a brass clock and rear cabinets of bevelled glass. I'm not sure what it was called back then—it seems to have been called the Old Chelsea Restaurant at some point—but certainly not Harvey's Chelsea House. Dick Harvey took over the location in 1977. He, at the time, also managed 0'Neal's Balloon, had reopened the Landmark Tavern, and had a reputation as "the fastest bartender who has ever worked New York," according to The New Yorker. Harvey refinished the mahogany and added five chandeliers and an historic display of bar-and-res-taurant glassware. (That means that the "old" sign outside I admire so much was no older than 14 years when I saw it.)
After Harvey gave up the fight, the place remained closed for a while, then was reopened as Tonic by one Steve Tzolis, the principal owner of Il Cantinori, Periyali and Aureole, all restaurants in Manhattan.
A newspaper described the new incarnation thusly: "I figured the owners would simply rip it apart and sell the fixtures and that if it ever reopened, it would be painted white. So it was a wonderful surprise to walk in on a recent night to find the place looking much as I remembered, only better. (It has been spruced up and is now a warm red.) It is also a scene. Young executives in pinstriped business suits, guys in white T-shirts and bikers’ jackets, lithe young women in jeans or black dresses were packed several deep at the bar, and they weren’t all just waiting for tables. The maître d’ led me away from this merry throng into the room next door, which, although full and lively, seemed quiet by comparison. It was like being sent to sit with the grown-ups. My friends were already at the table."
Tonic didn't take. The building was torn down in 2006. What became of the beautiful bar, the mahogany, the cast iron, the glass, the brass? Junked or broken up and sold.

Gargiulo's at Christmastime

To contact us Click HERE

I recently went down to Gargiulo's, which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy, to show some support and have a meal. The century-old restaurant was shuttered for a few weeks, after flood waters soaked the property, which lies just a block from the boardwalk in Coney Island. The lobby was deluged and the water reached as high as a foot above the elevated dining room. But the owners worked fast to open up, not wanting to lose out on holiday business.

The lobby bar is still under renovation, hidden behind a wall. This gives the foyer a more truncated look, taking away from the expansive feel you expect at Gargiulo's. But the dining room is in full working order, complete with lavish Christmas decorations. The service and food was excellent, as always.

Harvey's Chelsea House Remembered by Readers

To contact us Click HERE

I posted last week about the bygone Olde New York restaurant Harvey's Chelsea House. Since then, a couple readers have shared their memories of the place. This has been gratifying, as I had assumed that nobody remembered the place. (I've never seen it written about since it closed twenty years ago.)

Maximum Bob wrote:

This used to be my main hangout. I used to work out at a gym a block away and would hit the bar afterwards for a burger and a beer. It was an elegant, grownup place. The night before I got married, my best friends and I came here for dinner and drinks. This was the 80's. I will never forget Harvey's and that time in general. If I could go back in time I would jettison this age of mediocrity in a nanosecond.
And Lionel said:
It was a great place with one of the finest bars I spent time bellying up to. It had two old fashioned cash registers that were functioning and used. Some very talented artist did an oil painting that depicted the bar and was beautifully accurate. I was heartbroken when it was no more. I would occasionally see the actress Sandy Dennis in the back having a sandwich. Interestingly, many of the bartenders, and or owners, always referred to the bars that they worked at as ‘the store,’ kind of a holdover from old New York. It was a truly beautiful barroom.
Sandy Dennis was a regular?! I love the memory of the place even more now.

Harvey's Chelsea House Recalled By Former Waiter

To contact us Click HERE

Two weeks ago, I reminisced about the long gone Harvey's Chelsea House. One week ago, I published the reminiscences of a couple readers who remembers the bygone Chelsea landmark. Now I have a lengthy memory shared by a former Harvey's Chelsea House waiter! Here it is:
Thanks for covering one of the great NYC institutions of the 70's and 80's. I was a waiter at Harvey's from 1977 into the early 80's. Some more details that you might not be aware of - or might enjoy remembering:
Sandy Dennis did come into Harvey's regularly. In fact, I remember working a late lunch shift on one of those cloudy Manhattan days when the sky suddenly opens up and a wall of water descends suddenly and with very little warning. Sandy Dennis must've been in the neighborhood and totally got caught in the downpour. She came running into Harvey's practically drowned holding a newspaper (fast becoming paper mache) over her head. In her haste she practically ran into me and we both started laughing like school kids. I said "Honey, I am sorry, but you look just like you did in 'The Out-of-Towners.'"
We also had a number of other celebrity regulars in those days... I remember waiting on Rock Hudson, the late great Lynn Thigpen, Pamela Reed... the costume shop Brookes Van Horn was located around the corner. And a lot of those people ate lunch at Harvey's Norma "the bead lady," Academy Award-winning designer Ann Roth, designer Gary Jones.
Dick Harvey was one of the best employers and restaurant owners I have ever met in my life. He was fair, generous and once you had proven yourself, you were part of his family. And that family was diverse—most of the waiters (all men) were gay, the kitchen was Chinese, the bartenders were straight and the busboys were Egyptian.
Oh, a bit of historical detail—I believe 108 W. 18th St., aka Harvey's, was one of the original Annhauser-Busch bars. The first floor was the original space, then Dick opened up the basement as a private event dining room (JFK Jr. came to a bachelor party held there one night). Dick loved historical detail—and there was a barbers' chair in that area that Louis B. Mayer had gotten his regular haircut in. (I think Dick also purchased Gloria Swanson's classic Rolls Royce which he drove and his wife would sit in the back). Dick also expanded onto the second and third floors of the building recreating the look and feel of the main floor—paneling to match the honduras mahoganny, brass fixtures and beveled mirrors. The second floor was regularly used for dining and the third floor was used mostly for private events. Dick had an elevator put in to expedite getting the food up to the third floor and to save the waiters' and busboys' backs.
Hope you've enjoyed this trip down memory lane your article inspired.

The Easiest Chicken Parmesan Dinner You'll Ever Make

After five straight days of rain andthen snow, it was amazing to see sunshine. The most amazing thing about the sunshine was that I could finally takethe dogs for a long walk.  When it rains, they refuse to go out longer than it takes to pee and quickly poop.  They literally become Ninjaish.  Normally, it takes them forever to find just the right spot to relieve themselves...that all changes with the rain. So after so many days of being trapped inside, their energy turns into crazy town. They were driving me BAT SHIT CRAZY. The fluffy white dog was expending her energy by running around the otherdogs and barking and breathing heavily. Another dog was stealing paper out of the trash and ripping it up in every roomof the house.  It was like AmericanHorror Story only without Jessica Lange. Things are finally back to normal…well as normal as it gets with fourdogs.
If you want a quick, easy and cheapdinner that is actually delicious, you should try this recipe.  I’ve done this for years and haven’t made itin awhile.  I made it the other night andwas reminded about how utterly simple it is to make this meal.

Secretmissions and secret weapons have been a part of every war.  A little known fact about the Korean War wasthat the United States had a secret tactical weapon.  That weapon was voluptuous sex symbol actressJane Russell.  Russell, star of TheOutlaw, Gentleman Prefer Blondes, The Paleface and many other movies, was infact a U.S. Air Force Douglas B-26C Invader light bomber.  She was assigned to the 3rd BombWing of the 5th Air Force.  Inbattle, Jane Russell with sprout massive wings and high explosives missileswould launch from her boobs.  When inthis form, Russell would fly day and night combat missions.  Her targets were normally Communist militarytargets like communication centers, battle supply line vehicles, bridges, etc.  For obvious reasons, Russell is notnormally credited with her military success because she wouldn’t really be avery good secret weapon if people knew her true role.

Back for Valentine's Day

I’m really sorry that I have been such a bad blogger lately.  I’ve actually been busy with mybusiness and I have also been sick.  In addition, I got a wisdom tooth pulledyesterday.  I feel pretty good today so Ispent the morning catching up on some housework.  I did want to take a short break to post atleast something to my blog so you wouldn’t think I was dead or caught in areally really slow traffic jam.
I’m feeling compelled to start making moonshine.  I’m guessing this has a lot to do withwatching a marathon of the show Moonshiners yesterday while I was taking postwisdom tooth extraction pain pills, but whatever…if seems like a goodidea.  Of course, there is the annoyingfact that it isn’t legal, but other than that, I really think a moonshine still would look pretty snappy by my box gardens in the backyard.  I’ll let you know how this progresses.
Also…am I the only one who kinda thinks Valentine’s Day isa little stupid?  I mean, it isn’t becauseI’m unhappy in love.  I’ve been happywith the same partner for nearly 20 years. I just think it is a conspiracy between the restaurants, card, candy,stuffed-animal and flower industries…seems like you ought to randomly show yourlove all year long by cooking moonshine for your partner.

Lost City Asks "Who Goes to The Lenox Lounge?"

To contact us Click HERE

The news that Harlem's iconic Lenox Lounge would close on Dec. 31 sent me out to the legendary boite for my latest "Who Goes There?" column. It's a first for the column in a way, in that few people think of the place as a restaurant; it's a jazz club first and foremost. However, they do serve full meals in the Zebra Room in the back.

Here's the article:
Who Goes There? The Lenox Lounge
Word has gotten out that the Lenox Lounge will close on December 31. When I visited on a Wednesday night a few months ago, there were a dozen or so attendees taking in the strains of the Nate Lucas organ trio. This past Wednesday, the iconic Harlem jazz joint was wall-to-wall.
There were plenty of regulars. You could tell when they slipped in because Lucas would take his fingers off the Hammond organ for a second to shake their hands or acknowledge a back slap (all without missing a beat, of course). You could also tell the travelers and first-timers as well. They were young, largely white, and had that wide-eyed look of people who have just entered an unfamiliar, darkened room and are waiting for their eyes to adjust. There were European tourists who were not shy with their video camera, and bespectacled, middle-aged, single-beer-nursing ladies in glasses who looked like they had escaped from the library. But mainly there were thin, white guys who had dragged their uncomprehending, blasé dates up to Lenox for a slice of real, get-it-while-you-can New York culture.
Lucas and company took it all in with a shrug, applying their natural swing to a series of Christmas tunes ("I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"). In the second set, they were joined by an also sax man and then, later, someone on the conga drum. The band kept growing. When they launched into Stevie Wonder's "I Wish," the roof almost came off the place. Over their shoulders, passersby on the sidewalk read the framed notices, telling of the Lounge's storied history, that were perched in the art deco, over-shaped window. They peered through the glass, the ash on the cigarette they drew on matching the red neon reading "Restaurant in Rear."
About half the tables in that restaurant—the famous Zebra Room—were filled, people getting their fill of fried chicken and waffles, and crab cakes. I sat at the bar and had fried chicken wings, which were not remarkable in any way. But no one comes to Lenox for the food. Certainly, not the well-cushioned woman who sat next to me. I swear she was on the same bar stool the last time I was here. She bought glass after glass of bad white wine, her back to the band. She listened closely to what Lucas was laying down, and moved a bit when the groove was good. But she never turned around to look at them. No need. She's seen them plenty of times.
The bartender served up beers, goblets of red wine, gin and tonics, highballs and an occasional Martini. The cupboards in the back bar behind him were labeled "gin cabinet," "Cognac cabinet," "vodka cabinet." The floor has a trap door as the end, and when the barkeep ran out of anything, he would descend into that netherworld.
Lucas, ending the second set, took a break and headed to the Zebra Room. Some of the newbies filed out; they'd had their taste. Other virgins filed in. The regulars stayed put in the curved banquettes along the south wall. Prime real estate. Hang on to it. Hang on to it while you can.
